2011 Hans Brinker Budget Trophy Winner!

We are delighted to announce that 3rd year BA Painting student, Eleanor Watson has been awarded the 2011 Hans Brinker Budget Trophy. Eleanor was declared the winner on 9th December in Amsterdam, taking home a cheque for 5,000 euros. This annual competition involves nominees from 5 British and 3 Dutch Art Colleges and culminates with visitors voting for their favourite work. Congratulations Eleanor on this huge achievement!

‘Richard III’ & ‘The Comedy of Errors’ make Observer’s Top 10

Back in July we posted about the Propeller Theatre Company’s critically acclaimed double bill production of ‘Richard III’ and ‘The Comedy of Errors’. Well another shout out must go to Design for Performance pathway leader, Michael Pavelka, the show’s set and costume designer, as it has recently been named in the Observer’s Top 10 Theatre Productions of 2011. Well done Michael!

Michael Pavelka’s ‘The Go-Between’ nominated for 2012 WhatsOnStage awards

Design for Performance pathway leader, Michael Pavelka , has designed the set and costumes for the new British production of ‘The Go-Between’.  This world premier musical/opera is an adaptation of LP Hartley’s 1953 romantic novel, which has recently been nominated for the 2012 WhatsOnStage awards for Best Regional Production. The voting is now open so please vote for ’The Go-Between’ here at WhatsOnStage!

Gwennan Thomas selected for abstract critical Newcomers Award

Gwennan Thomas: Black, Like Snow

Wimbledon College of Art BA Painting graduate Gwennan Thomas is one of five artists who have been selected to participate in the abstract critical Newcomers Awards.

This is the inaugural year of the prize, offering graduate artists from the 2011 degree shows an opportunity to exhibit alongside the five established artists who selected them. Phillip Allen, Carol Robertson, Iain Robertson, Alan Shipway and Gary Wragg toured shows nationwide to select their chosen graduate.

The £5000 abstract critical Newcomer Award will be announced during the exhibition, which will run at Kings Place Gallery from 30 March  – 20 April 2012.

Congratulations Gwennan on your selection, we look forward to next year’s exhibition!

This annual competition takes place on 9 December in Amsterdam and involves nominees from 5 British and 3 Dutch Art Schools, with the audience voting for their favourite work.

Future Map 11: Wimbledon

The nominees for Future Map 11 have been announced. Wimbledon College of Art graduates included this year are (from top to bottom):

Future Map is an annual survey show exhibiting the best cutting edge talent from the graduating year at University of the Arts London. Reviewing all the graduate and postgraduate courses in art, design, fashion and communications, a panel of industry experts chose works they feel best represent the next generation of creativity.

This year’s panel are David Roberts – Collector and Founder of the David Roberts Arts Foundation, Mark Rappolt – Editor, Art Review, Lulu Guinness – internationally acclaimed handbag designer and Matt Stinchcomb – European Director, Etsy.com.

The winner of the Future Map prize – £3,000 and an opportunity to make a commercial edition with the Zabludowicz Collection will be announced in January 2012.

The Future Map 11 exhibition runs from 12 January - 5 February 2012 at Zabludowicz Collection.

John Smith flim still

Date: Monday 5 December, 18.00

Venue: HMVcurzon Wimbledon

HMVcurzon are collaborating with the CCW Graduate School (Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon). A collection of student films will be screened alongside the work of John Smith who, since 1972, has drawn upon the raw material of everyday life to meticulously re-work and transform reality.

John Smith will be present at the screening for a Q&A after the films.

The programme will include the following films by John Smith; Girl Chewing Gum (12mins, 1976) The Black Tower (23mins, 1985-7) The Kiss (5mins, 1999) Worst Case Scenario (18mins, 2001) Unusual Red Cardigan (12 mins, 2011).
